Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Article Advertising And Marketing And Content Cheapskates

 • Find Out More About:
 • Tecbosport Site

Submitted by: Keith Larson

I see this all over the place and nonetheless can’t imagine that people do not get it. Content material remains to be king on the net. The most important factor you’ll ever do to your website is to put in high-quality content. Nice content material will get you hyperlinks and your place within the search engine outcomes will most likely be because of the content you place into your web site.

Hundreds of oneway links will not get you ranked nicely with poor content. Great content will get you first-rate key phrase placement with or without one-method links, subsequently, content material is still a very powerful aspect of your site. Nice design, flash, graphics, and a cool banner will not get you ranked properly to your keywords and phrases. Great content material will!

Let’s first look at the content in your website. Images are great with alt tags. That will help. But it is the text on the internet pages that, when done appropriately, will help your search engine outcome. This textual content can be what goes to convert your clients into sales.

This text is what your customers will learn or not learn based mostly on it’s quality. This same text is what the search engines will scrutinize after they resolve how relevant your WebPages are to the search phrase you want them to send you guests from.

Now, let us talk about article marketing. If you recognize about article advertising in any respect, you already know you will be submitting articles everywhere in the network. The hyperlinks in the creator bio at the backside return guests to your web site in the event that they learn and just like the articles, you write down or have in black and white for you.

Just having your content pieces in 1000’s of article directories isn’t the purpose of article advertising and marketing, although there are article-advertising gurus out there who think it is. The aim is for site owners to find those articles and place them in their blogs and websites. If they use your article, their website or weblog is in all probability going associated to the same topic as your website.

You’re looking for these high quality links. The hyperlinks for just being in the article directories do not hurt you, however they don’t help almost as a lot as these from associated web sites do.

Your other hope is that thousands of individuals read your articles. Do you really need people to read poorly written articles and associate that deficient quality along with your web site? Effectively-written articles get folks to learn them all the way to the underside where your hyperlinks are located. Well-written articles replicate well on your web page.

If the articles are of great quality then seemingly your products and services have to be great as well. The reverse can be true in the reader’s minds. If the articles are written poorly, then seemingly your services are of little or no worth as well. It isn’t only about the number of key phrases and phrases positioned into the article folks.

With all of that being said, I still find everywhere in the web, especially at freelancer websites, people going in and saying issues like; “I would like four hundred articles written for website positioning and I am prepared to pay $1.50 per article.” Or they say something like; “I would like someone to write down content for my web site and I am only keen to pay $10 per page.”

I actually try to chorus from telling people they are, effectively . . . silly, however I am discovering it more durable and harder every day after I learn this stuff.

They may spend lots of or even thousands of dollars to have their web site designed so it seems to be really pretty, but the text, the stuff that can actually get first-class search engine outcomes and gross sales, they don’t want to spend any money on.

Writers that recognize how you can write textual content that not only is interesting to the reader, but that is also written with the keywords and phrases in thoughts, are price being paid well. The moment you start hiring better writers and paying for text that converts sales, you’ll start to achieve success on the web. That low cost content material isn’t going to make you any money.

A website that is stunning however will get no visitors and sales may as well be an unpleasant web site. An ugly web site that ranks properly within the search engine and that makes gross sales will get more stunning by the dollar.

IMF and EU approve aid for Georgia

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

The International Monetary Fund and the European Union approved aid packages to help Georgia recover from its conflict with Russia, which occurred in early August. The IMF approved a US$750 million loan which will allow Georgia to rebuild its currency reserves. The European Union also approved an aid package of €500 million in aid by 2010, which is expected to help internally displaced people (IDPs) and economic recovery in the form of new infrastructure. Only €100 million of the EU aid will be given to Georgia this year.

These loans are aimed to restore confidence in Georgia’s economy and send a signal to international investors that Georgia’s economy is sound. According to the IMF, international investors have been “critical to Georgia’s economic growth in recent years.”

Takatoshi Kato, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chairman of the IMF executive committee, said the loan will “make significant resources available to replenish international reserves and bolster investor confidence, with the aim of sustaining private capital inflows that have been critical to Georgia’s economic growth in recent years.”

Georgia has requested $2 billion in international aid to help it recover from the conflict. So far, the United States has pledged $1 billion in aid. Further assistance and loans to Georgia are expected from other organizations. Kato noted that “…Georgia is expected to receive financial assistance from multilateral and bilateral donors and creditors in support of the reconstruction effort.” It is expected that an international donors’ conference will take place next month to solicit more aid for the country.

Georgia’s government expects that economic growth will be more than cut in half as a result of the conflict. Last year, Georgia’s GDP increased 12.4% and it is predicted by the IMF that growth will be less than 4 percent in the coming year.

Romania plans its next privatisation initiatives

Monday, February 21, 2005The Romanian Government has made plans and identified its aims for the next privatisation program which will end in 2006. By the end of next year, the government hopes to sell all of its shares in Romtelecom, Romania’s largest telecommunications company, which is currently owned by Greece’s OTE but which the government maintains a 47% share in. The full privatisation will occur in two phases, with some of the government’s existing shares being sold on the Bucharest Stock Exchange this year, and the remainder being sold in 2006.

By 2006, the government also wants to sell its share in Postelecom, another telecommunications operator, and complete the privatisation of the Radiocomunica?ii, the national radio communications company.

The Government also wantes to begin analysis and consulting into the privatisation of Po?ta Român?, or Romanian Post, the full privatisation of which is set to be completed by 2009 at the latest.

Romania has embarked on a quite comprehensive program of privatisation since 2000, having privatised a part of Romtelecom, as well as full privatisations of several energy distributors and the nation’s largest banks, in addition to other smaller companies. However, these privatisations are dwarfed by that of Petrom, Romania’s national oil company, which was bought by Austria’s OMV in 2004 and is the largest Romanian privatisation ever.

The current Liberal-Democrat governing coalition in Romania has privatisation and economic liberalism as one of its main policies, having also introduced a 16% flat tax rate for personal income and corporate profits at the start of 2005.

Creating Beautiful Synthetic Grass

Creating Beautiful Synthetic Grass

by

CarmelaHarmonAY

One of the most important elements in the procedure of engineering and manufacturing

synthetic grass

is how yarn is extruded. The way in which the yarns are composed contribute to the texture, feel, and overall aesthetic of the synthetic turf. Thus, knowing the process of yarn extrusion really puts into perspective the detailed process of making realistic and beautiful artificial grass. Using the new processes and technology for artificial grass yarn extrusion, state of the art turf products are readily obtainable on the market today.

The polymers in which modern artificial grass products are comprised of help to make supple and natural grass. A mixture of nylon, polypropylene, and polyethylene are the key ingredients used to comprise the yarns in synthetic grass. These polymers come in the type of pellets and are placed into a hopper. Other ingredients like dye, ultraviolet protective solutions, stabilizers, and also other additives are then added in to the hopper as well. All of these ingredients are mixed thoroughly inside a significant steel mixer, which melts the pellets down into a pliable consistency like that of taffy. Once at this point, the extrusion approach is ready to begin.

The yarn extrusion approach starts with the thick consistency of polymers and additives becoming fed into an extruder. The extruder looks much like an enlarged perforated steel plate. The liquid mixture filters by means of these holes, generating long, thin strands, that are the fundamental makeup of the turf blades. These long strands are then carried through a water trough to harden and solidify. The strands are then sent by way of the carding machine to keep every yarn separate and be stretched. The machine continues to pull the yarn strands to enhance durability, whilst attaining the best blade thickness, most comparable to natural grass. Then, these yarns are rolled into spools. When the spools are complete, they are manually removed.

After, several spools at a time are unwound by machinery, and intricate yarns are woven. These yarns create monofilament strands, characterized by bigger fibers and a larger denier than multifilament yarn fibers. After the monofilament yarns are woven, they are re-spooled with the assist of guides to be able to keep it from becoming slack. The yarns are then heated to set a variety of shapes.

Once the yarn extrusion and weaving processes are accomplished, the turf is ready to be tufted. The woven yarn spools are placed via a tufting machine to sew and stitch the fibers to a synthetic major backing, a lot like a sewing machine with hundreds of needles. The looped yarns are then cut on the other side of the turf to replicate grass blades. After the major backing and secondary backing are coated with latex and sandwiched together, the turf is cured with heat. Then the completed item goes by way of a machine to clip off any additional long yarns.

The procedure of making and extruding yarns is an integral element of the entire synthetic grass production method. It really is inside this approach that modern artificial grass is able to truly replicate natural grass in both looks and texture. Modern yarn technology may be the driving force behind creating lovely and realistic artificial turf.

The 6th annual RoboGames, a robot competition that takes place in the United States, was held this month with 403 robots from 18 different parts of the globe competing in the categories of combat, sumo, robo-one/androids, open, hockey, art bots and junior league.

This year’s medals went to the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Brazil, India, Canada, Indonesia, South Korea and Russia (see table below). Other participants were Australia, Austria, Colombia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Peru and Taiwan.

RoboGames 2009
Flag Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
United States 31 30 24 85
Mexico 2 3 4 9
United Kingdom 6 2 0 8
Brazil 2 3 2 7
India 0 1 2 3
Canada 1 0 1 2
Indonesia 1 0 0 1
South Korea 1 0 0 1
Russia 1 0 0 1

Although the host country carried off most of the medals, visiting countries stood out at some events, like Mexico at 1 lb autonomous combat, 500 g autonomous sumo, 100 g autonomous sumo and autonomous line follower, Brazil at 3kg sumo (both autonomous and radio-controlled), and the United Kingdom in the “best of show” and “walker challenge” modalities.

“Taking part gave us the opportunity to test our knowledge against students from other nations, and proved that we are at the same level or better than other students from famous schools”, said Mexico’s National Polytechnic Institute student Erick Rodríguez who, along with his fellow team member Rogelio Baeza, took gold in the autonomous line follower event.

RoboGames, previously ROBOlympics, holds the Guinness Record for “world’s largest robot competition”. It was founded in 2004 by David Calkins to help robot builders exchange ideas and learn from each other.
