Building in Barcelona damaged by explosion

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

The Italian Cultural Institute in Barcelona was damaged today by an explosion. One Spanish policeman was injured and his bomb-sniffing dog killed. Staff at the Institute discovered a suspicious object and called police. Police then arrived with a bomb squad and bomb-sniffing dogs.

The explosion, described as small by Italian Embassy spokesman Filip La Rosa, occurred while police were investigating the object. Franco Giordano, Italian consul in Barcelona, described the home-made bomb as a coffee maker (a macchinetta di caffè) with cables.

The Italian Cultural Institute is located at the passatge Méndez Vigo, in the Eixample district of the Catalan capital. Italian language courses were suspended for the day.

Why Construction Workers Need To Be Very Concerned About Mesothelioma Cancer

 • Find Out More About:
 • Land For Sale Dubbo

Submitted by: Jason Bacot

If you, a family member, or a friend is a construction or maintenance worker, the form of cancer called Mesothelioma, should be of special concern to you. This especially applies to you if you work primarily in old buildings, or in the north eastern part of the United States.

However, this warning is not limited to construction workers in the US only. Anybody that is employed in this field that ever steps foot in an old building, needs to be very aware of the dangers involved in this activity.

The reason old buildings are such a common cause of Mesothelioma Cancer, is that there is a substance called asbestos that was widely used in the construction process decades ago. At the time, it was sought of as a kind of an out of this world manmade product, because it had so many fantastic characteristics.

It was an exceptional insulator and a very powerful fire retardant. In addition, at the time is was an extremely inexpensive building material to use, so it was put in almost every building that was built until the scientist discovered how deadly it was.

What makes this such a big issue today, is that nobody really knows how many buildings it is in, where they are located, or where it is situated within the buildings. It is possible for asbestos not to cause any health problems at all in a particular building if it’s completely covered by concrete, or it does not have access to air.

But, once the air is able to reach it, the dust in the area can contain its particles that a person could breath, which could eventually lead to death. Now that you know all of that, it is very easy to determine that both construction workers, and maintenance people need to educate themselves on this very fatal material.

They need to be able to recognize it immediately, and warn their co-workers about it. When it is discovered, there have been very specialized and strict procedures that must be followed if it is to be handled safely.

The employees that will eventually remove it from a building will wear protective clothing and masks to ensure none of the substances gets on them. In addition, the building is entirely sealed, so that during the removal of it, none of the asbestos can leak into the air, where it could cause a person to come down with Mesothelioma Cancer.

This is such a deadly material, that even housewife’s that only washed their husband’s clothes, have developed this cancer, and died from it. Even inhaling a very few particles of it, can lead to catching this horrifying health condition.

If you are either a construction worker, or are employed to do regular maintenance in old buildings, you really need to go out of your way and learn everything that there is to know about asbestos. A person that comes down with Mesothelioma Cancer, is in very serious danger of losing their life. This is not something to be taken lightly, because if you do, it will be too late for you when you do come in contact with it.

Jonathan Ross announces departure from BBC

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Television presenter and BBC Radio 2 disc jockey Jonathan Ross has announced his departure from the British Broadcasting Corporation. Ross currently presents his own chat show, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, as well as presenting his own programme and The Film programme on BBC Radio 2. He has decided to leave the corporation when his contract ends in July 2010. The contract was reported to have a value of £18,000,000 over the space of three years, however this has not been confirmed by the BBC.

Ross, who has been working with the BBC since 1996, spoke to news reporters outside his house. “It’s probably not a bad time for me to move on — and it’s probably not a bad time for the BBC, either,” he stated. “I’ve got six months left, I’m hoping to make the best shows of my career with them.” This information emerges one day after the announcement came that another BBC talk show host, Graham Norton, had signed a deal for two years with the BBC. Rumours began to mount in the newspapers that Norton would soon take over Ross’ television slot. Alan Yentob, the BBC’s Creative Director, said that “[y]ou don’t need to compare Graham with Jonathan Ross. No decisions have been taken with that slot.”

Working at the BBC has been a tremendous privilege.

In 2008, Ross was involved in the infamous incident involving Russell Brand and himself leaving obscene messages to actor Andrew Sachs via a voicemail service. Regarding his departure from the BBC, Jonathan said: “Although I have had a wonderful time working for the BBC, and am very proud of the shows I have made while there, over the last two weeks I have decided not to re-negotiate when my current contract comes to an end. While there, I have worked with some of the nicest and most talented people in the industry and had the opportunity to interview some of the biggest stars in the world, and am grateful to the BBC for such a marvellous experience. I would like to make it perfectly clear that no negotiations ever took place and that my decision is not financially motivated.

“As I have said before — I would happily have stayed there for any fee they cared to offer, but there were other considerations. I love making my Friday night talk show, my Saturday morning radio show and the Film Programme, and will miss them all. Working at the BBC has been a tremendous privilege, and I would like to thank everyone who has watched and listened so loyally over the last 13 years.”

Details emerge of Honda’s withdrawal from Formula One

Monday, December 8, 2008

More details have emerged over the weekend after the surprise announcement last week of Honda‘s intention to sell its Formula One racing team, Honda Racing F1. The team management, Nick Fry and Ross Brawn, have already announced confidence in their ability not only to find a buyer for the team but also to deliver the performance expected of Honda’s 2009 car. Prices as low as £1 have been put forward as possible prices tags for the Northampton based team, with Honda CEO Takeo Fukui stating that “Just to make the team possible to exist, a small price tag is acceptable”.

On Saturday the Japanese car giant said that before selling the team it was going to offer British driver Jensen Button, who had given the Honda team its only victory, a way out of his recently signed multi-million pound contract with the team so he could try to get a drive with other teams. However, Ross Brawn appears eager to retain the Briton and either retain Brazilian Rubens Barrichello or sign GP2 driver Bruno Senna, nephew of legendary racer Ayrton Senna. At an industry awards dinner, Button indicated his desire for a buyer to be found for Honda, saying any buyer would get “… a great team with excellent facilities. And with the leadership of Ross Brawn, and the whole team as they are, we can come through this and be on the grid in 2009”. Button has also spoken of his shock and pain at Honda’s decision.

Ross Brawn, who was brought into the Honda team with much fan fare before the 2008 season, has spoken of his shock at finding out about the sale of the team. Brawn, who is credited with helping Michael Schumacher and Ferrari dominate Formula One for much of the last decade, indicated he was expected funding cuts and had prepared a reduced budget but hadn’t expected the full withdrawal of support that Honda announced. Brawn has also indicated understanding of Honda’s reasoning, with their sales down 40% in some markets and Honda F1’s £200m+ budget a cost they were unwilling to bear.

Though Honda has committed to providing a budget for the team until March, the budget is lower than that which had been expected and so the team has had to pull out of the crucial winter tests at Jerez. This has denied Formula One hopeful Bruno Senna another test with the team and has combined with the engine implications of Honda’s withdrawal to push the new car’s final testing from January to March, just weeks before the first Grand Prix in Australia. Ross Brawn however remains confident of competing with new Formula One frontrunners BMW Sauber and Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has tipped the team as a great buy, saying “I’ve no doubt Honda would have been in top four next year without any problems. They’ve spent a lot of money to put themselves in that position so if anyone does want to be in F1 this is a team they should look to buy. It’s a big opportunity for any company that’s run efficiently to benefit”.

Date announced for by-election to replace former New Zealand PM Clark

Monday, April 20, 2009

The government has announced 13 June as the date for the upcoming Mount Albert by-election.

The by-election has been caused by former Prime Minister Helen Clark‘s departure to head the United Nations Development Program. While it is considered to be a safe Labour seat, the by-election is expected to be heavily contested.

Candidates must be nominated by 19 May.

Nominations for the Labour Party close on Wednesday. So far four candidates have put their names forward: Auckland city councillor Glenda Fryer, former candidate Hamish McCracken, University of Auckland political studies lecturer Meg Bates and employment lawyer Helen White. List MP Phil Twyford, widely expected to succeed Ms Clark, has not put his name forward.

The National Party has narrowed its possible candidates down to two: list MP Melissa Lee or unsuccessful 2008 candidate Ravi Musuku. The decision will be made at a party meeting on 4 May.

The Greens and ACT New Zealand will both contest the by-election, but have yet to select candidates.

QNET Ltd has footprints in over 22 countires with subsidiaries in all these locations.. QNET Ltd uses word of mouth promotion and ecommerce to promote as well as distribute it’s products. This type of interactive selling has worked well for QNET and its IRs

QNET products range from Luxury and Collectible Products like rare coins, jewelry, watches; Vacation and Holiday packages; Wellness and Health products like the bio disc, pendant, personal care products; Telecommunication packages and much more.

To start a business with QNET, one needs to buy a product of their choice. On completing this step, the distributor qualifies to be an independent representative(IR). A virtual office is given to the IR and they are now free to disribute products and promote their business

QNET uses the balanced binary compensation plan. IR in this case will have to refer a minimum of 2 individuals to the company who inturn purchase products of their choice from QNET The IR can then start earning commissions. The best part about this is that QNET does not charge on monthly basis and the members purchase products only once If you have been online, I am sure you have read one QNET Review after another. There are so many inconsistent reviews and sundry ideologies from different individuals about QNET. This is quite common in MLM industry

The honest truth is, QNET is a legal network marketing company with phenomenal products and a moneymaking business model. It is not a scam. I use their products and love them. If you are thinking about starting a QNET business, you must know that success depends on individuals. It is not a get rich quick scheme. You need to work hard and to be patient. This is why so many have been frustrated because they thought it was a way to get rich quick.

QNET network marketing business, like life, is what you make it. And as Shakespeare says, “this world is a stage and we are all players in different scenes”. Those who play well go on. Europe’s airline chaos: in depth

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Aviation experts are warning that air traffic across western Europe may continue to be affected by an Icelandic volcano, which has been billowing clouds of ash and spreading it throughout the region.

Experts say that the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, located in Iceland, continues to have “sporadic eruptions”; dark ash clouds have been moving south and east of the area, causing mass flight cancellations all over Europe, spanning from the UK to Russia over fears that the soot may be catastrophic to planes – such as causing engines to fail in-flight or severely reducing the pilot’s visibility.

The ash clouds are drifting between six to nine thousand meters above the ground, and are moving eastwards, over northern France and Austria and towards Russia at about 40 kilometers per hour.

Already, thousands of passengers have been left stranded around the world, unable to travel to and from various points in Europe. The continent’s air-traffic control center predicted 17,000 flights to have been cancelled on Friday alone, and indicated there would be further disruption today. The cancellations are costing airlines about US$200 million daily, the International Air Transport Association reports.

A global association of air traffic control companies commented that ash clouds would probably continue to affect flights for some time. “The knock-on effect of the volcanic ash plume over northern Europe is likely to disrupt European airspace for several days,” the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization said in a statement. “Traffic will have to be reorganized and rerouted and flights preplanned, all on a dynamic and quite unpredictable basis.”

“The skies are totally empty over northern Europe,” said Eurocontrol‘s deputy head, Bryan Flynn. The agency said more than half of Europe’s average 28,000 daily flights were cancelled yesterday, twice as many as were called off on Thursday.

In a special report, Wikinews takes a look at how different countries have been affected by this event.

All of Germany’s sixteen airports with international flights have been shut down today, including the busy Frankfurt airport. A spokesman for carrier Lufthansa says all of its flights were cancelled until no sooner than 20.00 local time (18.00 UTC). He said that there were no planes from the airline in the air anywhere on the globe. “There has never been anything like this,” he said.

Icelandic airports are open, despite being in such close proximity to the billowing volcano, as the winds are blowing ash clouds away from the vicinity.

The Icelandic Met Office’s Matthew Roberts, told the BBC that the volcano hasn’t been expending as much ash, and that the eruption was slowing down.

Icelandic officials are urging local residents with respiratory problems to refrain from going outdoors, and encourages the use of protective goggles and masks to those who do go out.

Most disruption in the country has actually been to ground, not air, traffic. Local police chief Kjartan Thorkelsson commented: “We had to close roads because of the ash yesterday [Thursday], even though it was not very thick.” He added that the ash “is particularly dangerous for animals, since it can go into water and the grass they eat, [but] [i]t is not as dangerous to humans”.

Experts suggest that occasional disruptions are possible throughout the next half year, should Eyjafjallajokull continue to erupt. Another concern is that it may trigger an eruption from the larger Katla volcano nearby, which has occurred every time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted for the past few centuries.

Even countries as far away as Japan were affected by the ash clouds. A correspondent for the BBC, in Tokyo‘s Narita Airport, says that many travellers en route to Europe had to spend the night in the departure lounge because their flights were cancelled: “Airlines have handed out sleeping bags and blankets but there have been complaints there aren’t enough to go round. The longer the airports are closed the longer the backlog of passengers builds up,” he reports.

Polish authorities have suggested that they will delay the funeral of deceased president Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash in Russia last week. Many world leaders planning to attend the funeral might be prevented from doing so due to the ash clouds. Poland was one of twelve to close down most or all of its airspace.

The president’s family, however, has insisted the ceremony, to be held in Krakow, proceed as planned.

The UK’s National Air Traffic Service (NATS), says that its restrictions on airspace in the country would remain in effect until no sooner than 13.00 UTC today. Travel bans for Northern Ireland and Scotland have been lifted, although NATS stressed that this does not necessarily mean flights to and from the area will actually resume.

Ryanair, meanwhile, cancelled all its northern Europe flights until 13.00 on Monday. British Airways called off all of its flights from London airports.

UK ferry operators saw a jump in bookings as stranded air travellers sought other ways to cross the English Channel.

A spokesman with the British Civil Aviation Authority commented that, [i]n terms of closure of airspace, this is worse than after 9/11. The disruption is probably larger than anything we’ve seen.”

A correspondent for Al Jazeera reporting from London Heathrow airport described stranded travellers’ attitude as being “increasingly frustrated”. He remarked: “Some sources I’ve been speaking to have been indicating that this will probably be extended further. There may be intermittent disruptions to flights for months to come.”

The Icelandic volcano may cause the US to experience volcanic sunsets. Vulcanologist Jay Miller claims, “Once it stops erupting it will take a few days to settle out. As long as there’s ash in the atmosphere or any pollutant for that matter, you’ll see these alterations in the color we see in the sky.”

Brian Toon of University of Colorado, Boulder, says: “It’s unlikely any of this volcanic ash will get as far as the United States. But it is possible. It’s just rare. It’s likely the stuff will get washed out before it ever gets here.”

American Airlines, in the meantime, announced it had cancelled 56 of its flights to and from Europe today, and the same amount yesterday; countries to which flights were not called off were Italy and Spain. US-based airlines make 337 flights between Europe and the US daily; of those, 280 were cancelled yesterday, the Air Transport Association of America says.

The Icelandic volcano has not caused many problems in Chile. SCL reported to El Mercurio that just a flight has been cancelled. The flight was operated by Air France, that may had went at the 16:00 local time to France. “We don’t know if this suspended flight will go, yet,” SCL reported, and warranted that “Air France is not going today.” SCL also stated that has not been cancelled any other flights, but that could change as the time goes by.

Cool Your Home Efficiently Using A/C Repair In Moreno Valley Ca

 • Find Out More About:
 • Drama And Acting Classes

byAlma Abell

There are a great many things that the homeowner has to worry about and their home air conditioning system shouldn’t be one of them. You can reduce these concerns by consulting an expert in A/C Repair in Moreno Valley CA whenever you begin to notice the system acting up. Some important signs to look for include excess or unusual noises coming from either the interior cabinet or the external condenser, excess moisture leaking from the evaporator coil or tray and any possible loss in cooling ability. Some of these problems may be the signs of a dirty system, but they could also be indications that the unit needs to be serviced.

One of the most common reasons for using A/C Repair in Moreno Valley CA is a failing condenser system. The condenser is the external unit that compresses the refrigerant. This is important because the compression causes a state change in the coolant which allows it to collect warmth from the home. The most common cause of condenser problems is due to age which can cause leaking condenser valves. Another possible problem is low refrigerant which reduces the overall efficiency of the condensing unit.

Perhaps the best reason for hiring A/C Repair in Moreno Valley CA is the annual maintenance that any system needs. Routine maintenance is crucial for quality cooling at the lowest energy consumption. Most A/C manufacturers suggest having your appliance serviced at least once each year to ensure the unit is properly cleaned and the refrigerant is properly charged. As part of the service your technician should clean the evaporator coil at least once every three to four years. This cleaning will remove the gunk that builds up in areas where you can’t easily clean.

You may also find it important to contact an expert in A/C Repair in Moreno Valley CA to replace your thermostat. This is especially important for older A/C systems that use a manual control. These controls can use contact points that get dirty and fail to switch the system on or off properly. If you have an electronic control you may have problems with failing circuits which could cause the system to operate erratically and require the control to be replaced.
