Quiznos restaurant chain airs controversial commercial

Friday, April 3, 2009

Quiznos, a fast food restaurant chain that specializes in selling submarine sandwiches, has aired a controversial television commercial, with an extended version only appearing in the late-night lineups. The commercial is a promotion for the company’s new sandwich, the ‘Toasty Torpedo’. Bob Sassone, a writer for TVSquad.com, argues that it is homosexually themed and compares it to pornography.

The commercial begins with a toaster oven talking to Scott, a Quiznos sandwich maker, in a male voice. “Scott, I want you to do something,” says the toaster to Scott. As he takes a bite of a Torpedo and appears to look in the direction of his genitals, Scott says to the toaster, “[sic] not doing that again. That burned.” The toaster replies, “We both enjoyed that.”

Later in the commercial, the toaster asks Scott to make one of the sandwiches and says the price of it is “sexy” and then “sexier.” Scott grins and does so. The toaster then asks Scott to “stick it in me”. The sandwich just happens to be 12 inches long, giving the appearance of a special relationship between Scott and the toaster oven.

Quiznos published a press release on March 24 announcing the new line of sandwiches. They stated that their price of US$4 helps to ease the economic pinch. In a statement to Wikinews Quiznos stated that their commercials are within the company’s character and they were designed to get people talking.

“We developed our new ads to be consistent with the Quiznos brand and to get people excited about our new Toasty Torpedoes. Some of the ads are edgy and provocative, but they’re well within the confines of the Quiznos brand character,” said Rebecca Steinfort, chief marketing officer for Quiznos to Wikinews.

“Since Quiznos has a broad range of consumers that eat at its more than 4,500 restaurants nationwide, we tailor our commercials to be relevant and appeal to our diverse customers – all of whom are watching different kinds of programming. The new ads are fun and entertaining, and the edginess and innuendo of the ads are designed to get people talking about our new Toasty Torpedoes, and that’s exactly what we want: people to talk and taste our new sandwiches,” added Steinfort.

Bob Sassone a writer for TVSquad.com, one of the Internet’s top television weblogs, compared the commercial to a pornography film.

“The new Quizno’s commercial is probably the closest we’ll get to a gay porn flick in a mainstream sub shop ad,” Sassone wrote.

In 2007, the company made another controversial commercial. It featured people on the street eating samples of a Quiznos ‘Prime Rib Dinner’ sandwich. They promoted it as having a lot of “meat” and near the end it featured two women eating a sandwich saying, “It’s not lacking any meat. And that’s what real women need”.

“Nevertheless, Quiznos remains committed to providing its customers with high-quality ingredients at everyday lower prices, all with excellent service. As such, we encourage consumers to give feedback on the commercials to our corporate marketing department through the website,” said Steinfort.

Summer Maternity Dresses

 • Find Out More About:
 • Sympathy Flower Delivery

By Amy Jarman

Summer is one of my favorite fashion seasons because it means that the long-awaited summer dress has arrived! I love dresses, as they are comfortable, stylish, and always make me feel my best. During pregnancy this is no different, as the array of summer maternity dresses designed are cute, chic, and comfy. Encompassing the season’s latest trends, they allow every expectant mother to look and feel amazing. When one is looking for that perfect casual summer maternity dress, there are a variety of gorgeous options to choose from.

Patterns are huge this season, and there is no better way to showcase this trend than on a fun and flirty summer maternity dress. Floral print is one pattern that is being seen everywhere, as it is fresh and has a super feminine feel. When choosing a floral print dress, it is important to choose a print that is in proportion with your frame. If you have a smaller build, small flowers are the way to go, as you do not want a large print to overwhelm your frame. The Asymmetrical Ruffle Dress from Maternal America is a gorgeous option this season, and a surefire choice for one’s baby shower, a luncheon, or even an evening out. The pink and green floral pattern is pretty and intricate. The faux, one-shoulder neckline design is so unique, and the empire waist it creates is incredibly flattering. Lightweight, it skims one’s baby bump beautifully. Another great floral choice is the Floral Ombre Maternity Dress from Olian. Super flattering, the black scoop neck top tiers down to a white, blue, and black floral print. So sophisticated yet very fresh, it is incredibly flattering. We love the gorgeous silhouette that it creates, and how versatile it is. Aside from floral, tribal prints are extremely popular and gorgeous. Maternal America’s Dakota Kimono Tunic exhibits this style perfectly. Its blue and purple Indian style motif looks beautiful on any skin tone, and can easily be dressed up or down. The square shoulders and empire waist are flattering and allow plenty of room to expand during pregnancy. Floral or tribal, bold or understated, patterned summer maternity dresses are an excellent choice.

Color blocking, combining colors that complement each other well, is incredibly popular this season and is a stylish and flattering option for one’s summer maternity dress. Color blocking, when done correctly, can help create a beautiful shape for your figure. By wearing color where you want the eye to go, and a more neutral shade on your other half, you are automatically drawing the eye where you want. One beautiful option is Olian’s Sleeveless Striped Halter Maternity Dress. They striped halter bow top pairs perfectly with the black skirted bottom. With the high line of an empire waist, the illusion of longer legs and a leaner figure is instantly created. As comfortable as it is cute, this dress looks great paired with black heels or cute gold flats. The Chloe Strapless Maternity Dress from Maternal America combines color blocking and a pretty print to create a gorgeous dress. The bust of the dress has a modern fuchsia, tangerine, and magenta print, while the empire waist bottom is a classic solid black. Sleek, slimming, and sexy, the strapless top shows off one’s shoulders beautifully. Hitting just above the knee, the length of the dress balances the strapless top perfectly. Color blocking is stylish as well as being incredibly flattering, and it works well for both day and night looks.

With summer here, updating one’s maternity wardrobe with some gorgeous dresses is the way to go, as it will put that extra pep in your step and allow you to feel your best. From floral prints to geometric color blocking, there are a variety of options to choose from. Choose one that flatters your shape and that you can feel comfortable in all day long, and we know you will look amazing.

Virgin Atlantic jet fire investigation finds faulty wiring in A340 fleet

Saturday, February 14, 2009

Investigators in Ireland have found wiring problems in several Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340s as part of their investigation into a fire on board one such aircraft that was forced to divert to Shannon Airport.

The Virgin jet was headed from London Heathrow Airport to Chicago with 143 passengers and thirteen crew on January 11 this year. A small fire was noticed in a waste bin storage area in the first class section’s bar unit.

A damaged wiring loom could be seen sticking out of a hole in the compartments floor, and there was visible electrical arcing in the area. An attempt was made to control the situation by switching off electrical circuits, but both the fire and the arcing continued unchecked.

The aircraft’s captain declared an emergency and diverted to Shannon, which the airliner reached thirty minutes later. During that time, the crew used five 1kg fire extinguishers upon the fire, but each time the arcing continued and after about five minutes the fire reignited. Witnesses described the fire as consisting of “licks of flame”.

After performing a safe emergency landing the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting department tackled the fire with a 5kg extinguisher but met with similar results. After consulting with the crew the jet’s power was completely shut down, after which the fire was finally put out. Virgin initially claimed the fire had never occurred.

Investigators with Ireland’s Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) inspected the loom and found it to be “completely severed” and exhibiting “strong evidence of burning/arcing” according to a preliminary report released on Friday. The loom was identified as providing power and dimming circuits for mood lighting in the bar.

The AAIU says that it seems the loom had contacted the metal waste bin in the compartment above. There should have been rails to hold up the bin and a protective metal cover, but “no evidence” of these was found and the report notes that “Initial inspection indicated the possibility that they were never fitted.”

The bar unit is a modification exclusive to Virgin. The AAIU ordered all 36 of the airline’s A340s worldwide inspected, with both France and the United Kingdom assisting with this. The UK has identified four other aircraft with faulty wiring, it has now been revealed. Virgin says that “A few minor issues were found and were immediately rectified,” and adds that “The installation of the bar was carried out in accordance with all relevant regulations. Virgin Atlantic continues to assist the AAIU in their investigation and looks forward to the full report with interest.”

The AAIU says that “significant other issues are being examined by the investigation” in addition to the wiring defects. “These include the difficulties faced by the crew in isolating the damaged circuits, the emergency checklist, the design of the modification and the standards relating to such modifications,” said the report.

Virgin’s Boeing 747-400 fleet also has a similar bar installed on it, but there was not considered to be a risk to the aircraft’s wiring on that model. The fire involved a bar added three years ago, with the aircraft manufactured in 1998.

Tropical cyclone Meena strikes Cook Islands

Sunday, February 6, 2005

COOK ISLANDS — Emergency centre officials expressed relief on 6 February 2005 (local time) that damage from Tropical Cylone Meena, a category 5 storm, was less severe than anticipated after the eye of the storm bypassed the main island of Rarotonga.

Over the previous 2 days, as the storm made its way through the island group, flights to and from both Rarotonga and the outlying islands had been suspended, planes put under cover or flown out of the area and tourist resorts evacuated in the face of forecasts of 270 km/h wind gusts and 10 metre storm surges.

About 200 tourist stranded at Rarotonga Airport, after leaving their tourist resorts ahead of the storm, had to be evacuated to a local emergency shelter. Some criticised Air New Zealand for not giving more warning it was cancelling their flights.

Although flights resumed only 15 hours after the storm passed to the east, there was significant local flooding caused by 15 m high waves. Iconic store Trader Jacks was inundated by the sea as were other parts of Avarua town and northern Rarotonga coast. Although the cleanup is expected to take several weeks, damage was nowhere near as severe as that caused by Cyclone Heta to Niue in January 2004.

Saving On Airport Parking

by

Marco Terrell

Off-site airport parking is a boon for travelers. Often they prove to be cheaper than parking lots run by airports and online discounts and other conveniences make the option even more attractive.

Satellite parking lots face competition and so it is easy for those in the know to save big. Here are a few insights: 1. Keep a tab on offers. As the race for success becomes intense, all sites run attractive offers giving away coupons or web only deals. Many offer an e-coupon that entitles the user to a day’s free parking at selected parking lots. This means a saving of US$ 18. Other offers give away a day if you park for two days or 50% off on the first days parking fee.2. If you are a frequent user of parking lots check for offers where a parking operator with a major presence near airports you use offers a 50% discount if you purchase a certain number of parking vouchers online or on the phone using your credit card. 3. Many parking sites have a different rate for different parking positions. Check on the kinds of parking and rate differences. You could save up to $ 55 for a seven day parking. 4. Ask for rates depending on the length of stay. Rates vary so if you are going to need parking for a week then you could get a higher discount than the daily rate on offer.5. Many run a frequent user program where repeat customers are offered many facilities. This is similar to frequent flier programs.6. Find out if the lots you use offer special discounts to members of AARP, AAA, or other such organizations. In fact, AA members save between 10-20% on parking. Some sites even offer the service of picking up and dropping your car from the airport terminal.7. Do your research well compare providers, the rates on offer, as well as facilities at the place you need to park. If you are clever you can get more for less.8. Before you travel use the internet to check on daily and weekly parking offers. There are free days, discounted weekly rates, and guaranteed rates on offer at various times. You can avail the offer by making a booking online or printing out the page with a code and presenting it to the cashier at the parking lot.9. Keep track of promotions especially during holiday seasons. Many lots accept coupons and give away discounts offered by consumer products 10. Often pre-booking parking can get you a saving of even 60% and more. 11. Hotels often offer parking specials, so make use of the extra facility being offered by the hotel you plan to stay in.12. Some travel agents who book flight tickets offer advice or coupons for parking at the point of exit and entry. Ask you agent when you book your flight.Off site parking is not just fast and convenient it can be a saving too.

Thai court strips ex-Prime Minister of $1.4 billion

Friday, February 26, 2010

Thailand’s Supreme Court today ruled that the family of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra be stripped of 46.3 billion baht (US$1.4 billion) in frozen assets, more than half of a contested $2.3 billion fortune. According to the court, the seized assets were illegally gained while Thaksin was Prime Minister; specifically, his familial involvement and connections with Shin Corporation.

In a statement released by the court, the judges said that Thaksin had adjusted government policies to favor telecommunications businesses, including Shin Corporation, a large telecommunications company owned by Thaksin, and his family, and sold to a Singapore investment firm in 2006. Additionally, Thaksin was alleged to have deposited shares held in Shin Corporation with family members whilst in office – a move to avoid, under Thai law, illegally holding any company stock while Prime Minister. Additionally, he was found to have unfairly promoted a $127 million loan to Burma – benefiting a satellite communications firm controlled by his family.

In a response from an undisclosed location outside Thailand, Thaksin contested the ruling, claiming the case was politically motivated and that, “the court was used to get rid of a politician.” In his remarks, he said that he came by his wealth legally, and he would continue his fight against both the ruling and the party that ousted him in 2008. In Thailand, Thaksin’s red-shirted supporters publicly opposed the verdict; although, no significant disturbances have been reported despite government warnings over the possibility violence. Instead, protesters say they plan a mass demonstration against the ruling sometime in March.

How To Get Best Results From Your Web Design Dubai Company

by

naseruddin

If you are looking to create a strong online presence for your business your job doesn t end with choosing the right web design Dubai company. There are occasions when a business isn t satisfied with the website even after choosing a top notch development firm. To avoid such a situation you need to be actively involved in your project. Here are some of the things that you must do to get the best results from your website design Dubai firm.

Explain Your Requirements Clearly

In order to ensure that you get a website that meets all your requirements you need to put forth the requirements very clearly to the designers. You can do this by offering sample URLs of other sites which should act as a reference. If you have any specific requirements let them know of these in clear terms. In many cases the development company fails to deliver desired results due to lack of communication. Discuss the scope of your project with the developers and ask them to offer suggestions. Keep in mind that they know much more of web development and hence can offer you quality suggestions to better your idea.

Set Deadlines

Web development happens in stages such as designing, development and testing. For every phase you need to set proper deadlines based on the convenience for both the parties. Have this on the contract as this will ensure that the company adheres to the timeframe. You can attach penalty clauses to ensure there are no intentional delays. Review the website at each stage as this will put in the perfect checks and balances and ensure that you get a site developed.

Keep Track of The Project

Once the design and development work has started you need to constantly keep track of the work done. Ask them to regularly inform you about the progress of the project. For instance one the site has been designed you can ask for screen shots to make sure you are completely satisfied with the job. Ensure that the website is tested at every phase of development as this helps in getting rid of errors and bugs that might crop up during development. If you aren t satisfied with any aspect of the website let them know immediately as this will allow them to rectify the problem.

Review The Website Before Going Live

Once the website has been developed you need to review the website thoroughly before going live with it. A website that has errors and bugs can severely hurt your brand images. Some of the things that you need to closely review include the design and structure, content and the navigation of the website. In this stage if you find some glitches get them attended immediately by the firm.

You need to hire the services of a professional web design Dubai firm such as CANADA HiTECH (http://www.canadahitech.com). They have a proven track record and have delivered well designed and developed website to their clients in UAE and other parts of the Middle East.

Naseruddin Ali is an expert web developer and woks with one of the leading

Ariel Sharon’s brain shows activity

Saturday, January 14, 2006

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon remains in a coma after 10 days.

Medical experts on the outside say that Sharon’s failure to regain consciousness does not look well for his recovery.

On Wednesday, doctors began reducing the level of sedatives with the intent of drawing Sharon out of an induced coma. Hospital officials say that Sharon remains “lightly sedated”, but are not sure when he will wake up once they stop giving him the sedatives.

New reports say an EEG has shown that Sharon has activity on both sides of his brain and doctors say that’s the most “promising” signs they have had since they started to bring him out of the coma. Doctors also say that activity in both lobes doesn’t indicate anything about the extent of the brain damage. “It is another piece of information that on its own means nothing,” said Dr. Gal Ifergan, a neurologist at Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, who is not treating Sharon.

Although he has activity on both sides of his brain, Sharon could still have extensive brain damage, Ifergan said. He also said that it’s “very worrisome that he hasn’t woken from his coma”, yet.

There are 2 major types of stroke, and Sharon has had both. The first was a mild stroke Dec. 18 caused by a blood clot that lodged in an artery in the brain, cutting off blood flow and causing minor damage. The second occurred just one day before he was scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a hole in his heart. This one was a severe cerebral hemorrhage

“After nine days he has had very slow progress and that indicates more permanent injury to a level where his quality of life is affected,” Dr. Demetrius Lopes, a Rush University Medical Center neurosurgeon said. “And then decisions will have to be made,” he added.

Sharon’s condition is still critical but stable.

Belgian Indymedians discuss participatory journalism at open door day

Monday, February 18, 2008

Volunteers and interested people could visit the Belgian Indymedia headquarters in Brussels on Sunday during their second open door day. Around 50 people came to hear about the organisation’s evolution during 2007 and what’s coming up for 2008. A book about citizen journalism, with contributions from both mainstream journalists and several alternative media experts, was also presented. And the Indymedians mingled, with loungy Creative Commons music in the background.

Indymedia.be was founded in 2000, only a few months after Indymedia’s inception at the alter-globalist protests at the World Trade Organisation‘s summit in Seattle. This made them the first Indymedia on the European mainland. The Independent Media Center’s trademark is politically left, social reporting. The initial growth was slow, but during 2007, the organisation grew to around 110 regular contributors, with the first steps towards regional groups in Brussels and Antwerp. The public today could also visit the brand new media centre with new equipment. And although readership has increased exponentially to around 7000 visitors per day (and with it, server costs), finances have not, leading to a fund raising campaign.

Several projects during 2007 aimed to increase the quality of the articles; research projects such as those on the Belgian elections and formation crisis centred on social issues, where the mainstream media itself recognised that the political debate was often monotonous and lacking content.

Nevertheless, bringing analysis and background will continue a challenge during 2008. During the photographer’s workshop, the possibilities for photo documentary and photo-based interviews vs. simple photo reporting were illustrated as an alternative to bringing “just a bunch of pictures from another street protest.”

As a central player in the field of alternative media in Belgium, Indymedia also wants to stir the debate about participatory journalism. This has led to their first ‘media reader’ about the topic, and the creators hope more versions will follow.
