Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Things You Need To Know About Cat Accessories

 • Find Out More About:
 • Modelling Agencies Sydney

byadmin

Who doesn’t love a happy, playful cat? When your cat is healthy and well, you can feel the love, and maintaining your cat’s happiness and wellbeing is one of the most important aspects of being a responsible pet parent. However, it requires some specific cat accessories to keep life good for you and your furry friend. There are some important things to note when purchasing accessories.

Keep It Hygienic

Cats are so smart that by nature they handle their business in one spot – a litter box. It goes without saying that a litter box is one of the most important cat accessories that you can ever purchase. With a wide variety of sizes and styles available, it may be hard to choose. If you’re on a budget and your cat is low-key, go for a simple litter box. If you’re willing to shell out more cash or if an ordinary box isn’t good enough for your feline, shoot for a fancier model. The most important thing is to keep it clean and pristine for your kitty.

Rest Easy

Just like humans require sleep, so does your cat. You should make sure that your cat is comfortable during sleep time. Once again, the items you choose should suit your cat. Some cats love multiple pillows. Others like donut-shaped beds. Regardless, bedding should be comfortable and warm to keep your cat secure and snug at all times.

Beauty Time

Keep your kitty looking his or her best with the proper grooming tools. Opt for wire or bristle brushes, metal-toothed combs and a flea comb. These items not only keep your cat beautiful but safe and healthy as well.

CanadaVOTES: NDP candidate David Sparrow in Don Valley West

Friday, October 10, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with David Sparrow. Sparrow is a candidate in Ontario’s Don Valley West riding, running under the New Democratic Party (NDP) banner. The riding was set to vote in a by-election on September 22, 2008, following the resignation of John Godfrey, but Stephen Harper’s sudden election call nulled that effort.

Also running in the Toronto riding are Liberal Rob Oliphant, Conservative John Carmichael, Green Georgina Wilcock, and Communist Catherine Holliday.

The following is an interview with Sparrow, conducted via email. The interview is published unedited, as sent to Wikinews.

Wikinews interviews Canadian Paralympic skier Vanessa Knight

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Recently, Wikinews spent time with with Canadian Paralympic skier Vanessa Knight who was at Copper Mountain, Colorado for the IPC Nor-Am Cup.

((Wikinews)) We’re interviewing Vanessa Knight, who’s from Canada.

Vanessa Knight: That’s right!

((WN)) And what kind of skier are you?

Vanessa Knight: I am a disabled racer. I have a left arm amputation and I’m a speed skier.

((WN)) So you’re one of the standing skiers.

Vanessa Knight: Yes.

((WN)) I’ve been asking a lot of Paralympic disability skiers, what is the craziest skier of the slope? The standing ones, the blind ones, or the mono skiers?

Vanessa Knight: Oh my God, the blind ones for sure. I couldn’t imagine throwing myself down a hill without seeing anything. Especially the B1s. They have duct tape on their goggles.

((WN)) Where from Canada are you from?

Vanessa Knight: I’m from Quebec. Montreal.

((WN)) And how long have you been skiing?

Vanessa Knight: I’ve just entered my fourth year.

((WN)) And are you going to Sochi?

Vanessa Knight: I hope so!

((WN)) Are you going to beat… oh! Australia doesn’t have any skiers for you to beat. Do you think the level of competition for women’s disability skiing is high enough to give the sport a future?

Vanessa Knight: I think the level of competition is high enough, yes. But I still think we need more racers and people to get involved and really promote the sport, because, I mean, the more the merrier, right?

((WN)) Why are there so many men in skiing compared to women?

Vanessa Knight: I guess some girls are just scared and they don’t want to throw themselves out there. But I’m not like that and neither are the rest of the girls here. They’re not afraid to throw themselves down a hill and go fast.

((WN)) Do you think skiers are some of the craziest Paralympic athletes?

Vanessa Knight: Oh definitely.

((WN)) Is there anything you want to say about disability skiing in Canada that people in Australia or the world should know?

Vanessa Knight: Pretty much to say: It’s really cold in Canada. And we love it!

Digital Hearing Aids: Is The Cost Worth It?

 • Find Out More About:
 • Medical Billing And Coding Van Nuys Ca

By Steve DeWall

With the selling price of most digital goods over the spectrum in a freefall, why does it seem to be that electronic digital assistive hearing devices prices are still stratospheric? Digital assistive hearing aids are the latest and greatest but their associated costs feel unrestrained. We review what tends to make these types of high tech products so costly and exactly what you’ll be personally gaining for your hard earned money.

The cost of just one digital assistive hearing device may range from around $1750 to over $5000 at the retail level. The prices are undoubtedly great but let’s take a look on the reason why digital hearing assistive devices enjoy such a high price tag specifically in comparison to their analog brothers and sisters. A good reason that hearing aids command high costs is because of all the time that is invested into development and research. Another cause for the large price tag is that these devices incorporate miniaturized computer chips, helping to make them much more effective, but also highly priced. You can often expect to pay more when you are purchasing the latest electronic devices and assistive hearing devices are no different regrettably. Just take a look at the latest noise reduction headphones. You can see that it’s the very same with assistive hearing aid price tags as with the best noise canceling headsets available; the latest and greatest take a while for prices to fall.

Don’t worry though; specials on digital hearing aids are available to a thrifty purchaser. Don’t forget that there is a great deal of competition among assistive hearing aid retailers. Moreover, the World Wide Web allows consumers to obtain a far better deal. You can easily pay less if you are diligent in thoroughly conducting research.

As stated above, assistive hearing aid devices are excessively expensive. However, should you search intelligently you’ll be able to uncover many inexpensive choices on the market. The money necessary for digital assistive hearing aid devices is based mostly on the brand and model of assistive hearing device plus exactly what features it possesses.

The more cash you are prepared to invest, the more you’ll be pleased with the fine detail and top quality of the sounds you are able to pick up. If you are able to enter the high end of electronic digital assistive hearing aid device market, you will be totally fascinated with the wealth of sound you can pick up. Consumers say that they are able to pick up even the faintest noises, and perhaps the most talked about outcomes tend to be the way these high end designs have the ability to eradicate all feedback. These high tech devices also have a directional microphone, which may be directed at the user’s front, thereby removing extraneous surrounding noises.

For those individuals that already wear analog units, an upgrade to a digital design will provide arresting sound quality in regular day-to-day scenarios. A profound enhancement in hearing common everyday sounds is only the start. Where electronic hearing aids really earn their money is eradicating background noises. Adjustments can be done without having to mess with the volume control. A short time ago my brother-in-law, who sports high tech hearing assistive devices, pointed to a chat involving two individuals around forty feet away and asked me if I wanted to know what they were discussing. He had that much fidelity and enhancement!

If you decide that an electronic assistive hearing device is for you then first check with an ear doctor. Your ear doctor will run tests to help find out the level and root cause of your hearing disability. Digital hearing assistive devices are in general programmable so do not be surprised if you must go back to the doctor’s clinic a few times to get the product tuned in precisely the way you like. It could take some patience from you but the advantages are really worth your time. Assistive hearing aids cost a lot, but you ought not cut corners with something as essential as your hearing. Start by exploring the best hearing assistive devices and go from that point.

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

FDA warning on pistachios after salmonella contamination

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall on Salmonella contaminated Pistachios for 31 states in the United States.

“Our advice to consumers is that they avoid eating pistachio products, that they hold onto those products, that at this stage they don’t throw them out, they simply hold on to them as we’re learning more about them to determine if they’re part of the recall,” said Dr. David Acheson, associated FDA commissioner for food. However, it is expected that the recalled list may grow as the investigation continues.

Kroger Co. is recalling shelled pistachios called Private Selection Shelled Pistachios in a 10-ounce container with UPC code 111073615 and the sell dates of December 13 or 14 on the packages. Setton Farms based in California, the pistachio supplier, is voluntarily recalling their pistachios.

Products containing pistachios have not yet been recalled, but are under investigation. The salmonella contamination was discovered by Kraft foods during routine testing last Tuesday, before any illness were reported. They notified the FDA and the FDA notified Setton Farms. So far the source of contamination has not been revealed.

The 31 states initially affected are: (in alphabetical order) : Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Signs of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Those most vulnerable are the young, the elderly or those with an already compromised health condition.

This recall follows the long list of recalled peanut related products, peanut butter and candy bars which caused a salmonella outbreak at the end of January.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of “Masterpiece Theatre,” was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecuters.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

Backlash Against For Profit Schools

 • Find Out More About:
 • Social Media Reputation Management

Submitted by: Felix Chesterfield

For profit schools are taking a public relations beating these days. With an education bubble that is inflating beyond control, for profit schools have become public enemy number one. Widespread shaky practices and reckless profiteering have put these institutions in the crosshairs. But is it warranted? Are these schools really the root of all of education s evil and sins? Or are they merely just benefiting from an overall system that is in need of reform?

First, it must be acknowledged that much of the criticism against for-profit schools is warranted. There are numerous incidents of representatives from these institutions using their positions to push iffy students into enrolling and taking out student loans using dubious information and false promises. These representatives are typically paid on commission based upon enrollments. As such, their goal is often to get students to enroll and stay in school just long enough for the financial aid agreement to go into place and the checks to clear. At that point, they receive their commissions and the students begin to rack up (what eventually will become) a rather large debt. This does not even take into account that many of the students who graduate from these institutions will do so with near worthless degrees that do not make them any more hirable than they were beforehand.

Incidents like this are clearly examples of unethical behavior. However, are they significantly different than that of non-profit colleges? Well, yes and no. It should be noted that most state and even non-profit private colleges do not have recruiters who are paid on commission based upon financial aid sign-ups so that does differ from for-profit colleges. However, even non-profit schools are in a situation where they benefit from financial aid agreements to lesser qualified students.

Student loans are the source of the education bubble in this country. As unemployment rates for new graduates stay high, collegiate tuition prices continue to rise with administrations finding demand (with no job market) increasing in kind. As such, outstanding student loans are skyrocketing out of control with defaults occurring at just about the same rate. As much as we would like to make for-profit institutions the scapegoat for this outstanding debt, the fact of the matter is that a majority of it has occurred at traditional colleges. In addition, for profit schools, while offering degrees that may sometimes be dubious in nature, often offer tuition that is less than traditional schools (but still a large total in its own right).

The catch-22 in this situation is that there is no way that this nation can meet its education goals without for-profit schools. There is far more demand for education than available enrollment slots at non-profit schools across this country. We live in a nation where education offers the path to the American dream. The college education currently holds the same status as a high school degree did a half century ago. It is near (albeit not) impossible to reach high levels of management without one. Unless we revise what the American dream is and how it can be obtained, for profit schools will be a necessary evil to fill in the gaps for students who may not be able to attend non-profit schools for a variety of reasons.

About the Author: By Felix Chesterfield III For a comparison between a for-profit college and a non-profit institution, feel free to look at one of the

Caribbean Medical Schools

vs.

Harvard Medical School

. This helps to demonstrate the differences between the programs as well as the costs associated.

At least 107 killed in Mecca crane collapse

Saturday, September 12, 2015

A storm yesterday caused a crane to fall into Mecca’s Grand Mosque, killing 107 or more and wounding 238, according to Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Authority.

Civil Defense Authority director General Suleiman al-Amr, in remarks to al-Ikhbariya television, said “All those who were wounded and the dead have been taken to hospital. There are no casualties left at the location”.

The accident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, was caused by strong winds and heavy rain that led the crane to fall. Photos released of the scene showed numerous bloodied bodies and various scattered debris.

The accident occurred at a time when the mosque was relatively uncrowded. “Had it happened an hour later it would have been much worse,” Khaled Al-Maeena, editor at large at the Saudi Gazette, said. “Had it happened five hours earlier or four hours earlier, I think the death toll would have been more than a thousand.”

The crane accident comes just ten days before the beginning of the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam’s holiest site. As undergoing a pilgrimage to Mecca is a mandatory religious duty for all Muslims who physically and financially can, millions of pilgrims arrive in Mecca each year for the Hajj. Construction was underway at the mosque in order to enlarge the mosque and improve crowd control, which has been a recurring problem during Mecca’s pilgrimages.
